Making my own sushi

I’ve been thinking about making my own sushi. But having doubts as I have already mention this to my mum, and she was really reluctant on the idea. not everyone in my family loves sushi. only my dad, my bro and myself enjoy eating sushi.

if i would be making my own sushi, i would start with something simple. maybe make a gunkan maki sushi. choice of topping would be something that is easily available - tuna mayo, cucumber etc.

why gunkan maki sushi? coz i don't need to have the sushi mat. just nori, sushi rice, my choice of topping and my hands! maybe i don't even need to buy nori. maybe i should make nigiri sushi. but i doubt that the tuna mayo will hold into place without the nori.

i found a couple of links on sushi making.

Make My Sushi - this website has detailed instruction with animation flash animation. very cute indeed.

Sushi Day - this website shares loads of sushi recipes

hmm. when am i going to make my own sushi? i'm just worried, when i make them, nobody is going to eat them and i have to finish it all by myself. :(

Mr. Monkey R.I.P

Part I

^
A guy from Jabatan Perhilitan came to our house to meet my Dad. He came to solve our monkey problem. They had placed several traps around the mini jungle. They also hired a few people to shoot (no I'm not kidding) the monkeys. I thought they would actually transfer the monkeys into a zoo or something. I guess they had more than enough monkeys. So.. on Thursday, my sis and I just got back from shopping when we saw a corpse of a monkey (a Siamang/Gibbon to be exact) laying beside a tree in front of our house. Erk. Why did they shoot a Siamang? The Siamang has never been a nuisance in our neighbourhood. It was the other type of monkey who was terrorizing the neighbourhood. It's the brown fuzzy one with the black face, not the black monkey with the white face. Haiyah. Poor siamang!

Part II

^
Yesterday, we noticed an awful smell coming from the trees in front of our house. I realized it was the dead monkey which was rotting away. A pack of dogs (3 dogs) were seen to be eating the monkeys' remains. Yuck. I even took the chance to take some photos. The dogs in the comic above are the actual dogs who ate the monkey. I hope they didn't get tummy ache after eating that monkey.

Kenduri Aqiqah

Pada 17hb June 2007 (Ahad), kiteorg satu family ade buat kenduri aqiqah utk Maya Afiqah. Eh.. cam ryhme la pulak. Ehehee. Wat kecil2an je. Jemput jiran2 dan sedara yg tinggal kat KL. itupon ramai yg tak dpt dtg.

So pagi2 tu dah bangun.. ramai2 pakat mandikan Afiqah pestu pakaikan die baju. Yg kat atas tu baju die la tuh. Kiut tak? Akak dgn kite jenuh dok carik dress putih utk baby. last2 jumpe la satu kat Poney, Alpha Angle. Mule2 nak pakaikan die undies yg pink tu. tp Daddy ckp Afiqah nampak seksi sgt pakai undies. so terpakse tukar pakai suar pjg pink plak. huhuhu. nampak lawak la sket. tp takpe la. kire kekecik dah tutup aurat. tgn dgn rambut je still dedah lagi. Opps.

Nie mase tgh passing2 kat org2 surau utk cukur jambul baby. sebenarnye planning nak kasik Ustad je cukur. tatau la caner tah tetibe seme nak merase nak cukur jambul plak. sib baik tak passing kat area ponpuan skali, kalo tak botak chin la anak buah aku nnt. huhu. dah la rambut dah sket.. kene potong lagi. sedey betul.

Ehehe. Nie plak Danish - baby pujaan hati ku. Suke betul la tgk die nih. mase die memule dtg dulu die baru umo 3 bulan, itupon dah bulat montel. nih skang dah 10 bulan.. 10 kg tau. fuh. nak try angkat mmg tak larat. tp garang la Danish ni. org sentuh sket dah marah. Isk. Kalo korang tgk secara live seriyes rase nak gigit je budak ni. Die ni kire cam anak sedare kite la. sbb bapak die anak sedare mak kite. btul kan. kite pon dah confius dah. byk sgt sedara. Agak2, kalo matchmake dgn Maya Afiqah padan tak? Wahahah. Afiqah for sure nnt tinggi giler, sbb tgk gaye mcm ikut tinggi bapak die je. Danish ni nampak sasa semcm jek. ehehee. Agak2 padan tak derang? beza umo.. 9 bulan.

Nak dijadikan citer, utk kenduri aqiqah ni.. yg dikorbankan adalah kambing biri2. yg kambing berbulu tu la. kite mkn jela cam bese. lagipon kambing tu catering wat masak mcm2 jenis. ade gulai kari, gulai kurma.. pestu sup kambing. try la sket2. ntah caner, esoknye trus demam. org lain ok jek. kite siap muntah2 lagi. 5 kali pegi toilet utk muntah. 2 ari tu terbaring atas katil je. tido je. bgn pon utk mkn je. nak bangun lebey2 taleh lak sbb pening sgt. mkn pon takat milo dgn roti jek. huhuhu. kuar abih daging2 kambing yg aku mkn semlm. panas sgt kot. ke tak leh mkn kambing. selalu mkn ok jek. die kene masak western baru ok kot. masak cara kampung ni.. taleh diterime dek perut aku yg western ni. hik hik hik. tp mmg sekse la. dah lame dah tak muntah2 ni. last skali pas balik kampung mase raya last year. huhuh. taubat dah tamo mkn kambing lagi. Wuwuuu...

I'm Small Enough

^

Baby Maya Afiqah has this mosquito net that basically looks like a 'tudung saji'. She has another one that looks like a camping tent. I was so curious to see whether I could fit in the 'tudung saji'. I tried and was successful on my 1st attempt.

A Smelly Surprise

^
This happened several weeks ago. I had a job interview a day after that, so I went to get my bag to get things ready. And to my surprise, I found something in my bag - something very smelly. Huhu. It was 2 kuihs (1 pulut panggang and 1 kuih badak pedas) in a plastic wrap that my mum gave me a week before. I totally forgot that I left it in my bag. It was all moldy and the smell was OMG. Can pengsan! -_-

I threw it in the dustbin and I sprayed my bag with lots and lots of perfume before washing it. Wahahaha.

I Got Monkey Problem

As some of you might know, my house is surrounded by mini jungles. We are frequently visited by several family of monkeys. There are too many of them. For 18 years I've been living here, I've got to see many types of monkeys. Some are with black face with furry fur, then there are the typical monkeys that you get to see in parks and lastly a dwarf monkey.

Part 1 - The Peeping Tom

^
My bedroom happens to be on top of the garage which means there was a roof right outside my window. You could practically walk on the roof and jump onto the garden. You'll probably break your leg, but thats one of the escape route in my house in case of emergency. It was years ago since we had a peeping tom. then the monkeys just stop coming maybe bcoz i switched rooms - shared rooms with my sis. since now I'm back in my own room, I've been visited by male monkeys almost once every week. -_-

Part 2 - The Culprit

^
On 5th june, the internet was down bcoz the telephone wire outside our house snapped! The culprit was the monkeys. As my room faces the front of the house, I've always witness them using it as a bridge and also as a place for them to perch. The phone wire attached to our house is far more thin than the main cable. if only we could change to a thicker/stronger telephone wire. Sometimes I could see 4 to 5 monkeys crossing the wire at one time. I guess the weight of the monkeys made the wire snapped.

The next morning the Telekom man came to reattach the wire, but by 3pm the wire snapped again by the weight of the monkeys. Huhu. we had phoned Telekom (again!) to send a guy to fix it, but only after 3 days they (Telekom) sent a guy to fix it. Hopefully this time, the telephone wire will hold.

p.s: i was really bored since i had to go thru 3 days with no internet. so I got an idea to draw these. ehehe. the "peeping tom" really cracks me up. and YES... all these comics are not made up. its my real life experience!

Outing (5 June 2007)

Today for the 3rd time, I 'teman' my sis to do her checkup + baby checkup at Ampang Putri Hospital. Mum and Dad came along. there were not many babies, so we didn't have to wait that long for Baby Maya's checkup. baby Maya got her Hepatitis shot and underwent other tests. she gained 0.4 kg and her head shrank from 33 cm to 25 cm. I didn't know until now about babies head shrinking when they get bigger. after the checkup baby maya went home with mum and dad. My sis and I had to stay, coz my sista's name has not been called. usually we had to wait about 2 hours coz there were so many mummies who came for checkup. Huhu. So we walked out at 10.30 a.m. to 'jln-jln cari mkn'. As it was still a lil early, the only fast food chain that we liked (that was opened) was Sushi King. This is our 2nd time dining at Sushi King, Ampang. The 1st time was before my sis gave birth and there was one staff who commented, "Wuu.. besarnye perut!! still boleh jln2 ke?". Wahahha.

As usual, my sis (who dislikes sushis but loves bento meals), ordered the set meal which is the 'fry set'. I opted for sushi. We were seating next to the conveyor belt so I could just pick what sushi I want to eat. Eehehe. Aah. I've been craving for sushi for quite awhile now. Feel so happy that I could fulfill my cravings today. I took like 7 plates of sushis - 3 plates of RM3 Beige plate (inari, tuna mayo and Tori Karaage), 1 plate of RM4 Pink plate (Chigiri Age), 1 plate of RM 5 Red plate (Smoked Salmon) and 2 plates of RM 6 Purple plate (Unagi). hmmm.. I love unagi.

we finish our lunch at 11.30 am. we walked back to the hospital and found out we have 2 wait for another hour. I nearly dozed off while waiting. We went back home by cab. the cab driver were driving in zigs zags. i whispered to my sis,"tanak tunjuk jln shortcut ke?". my sis answered,"no need". i said,"then, the tambang mahal la nnt". my sis answered,"nevermind. very tired, cannot talk anymore. " and i swear i saw her face changed which looked like she wanted to say, "lagipon i got money". -_-

after reaching home, I prayed zuhur and followed mum and dad out, to pick a goat for baby Maya's kenduri aqiqah. I brought along my camera coz dad insisted me to bring it along. his idea was so I could later photoshop baby Maya 'riding' the goat. i thot that was one freaky idea.

Seeing the goats in person made me feel sorry for them. the goats who had been 'booked' by other people has been marked with a yellow spray paint. There were 2 types of goats - the imported goats from Australia or the local goats. There was one particular black goat that was very vocal. the rest was quiet as a rat. this particular goat kept on saying "Embekk.. Embekk". I thot the goat's voice sounded very human-like. I was eye-ing one goat which was a 'cow goat'. It was the only goat who was white with black spots. Ehehe.

^
Here are the goats!

Anyway, we end up not picking any goats and finally decided to come again on another day. Dad bought a bottle of goat's milk which cost RM12. So expensive!

^
I saw this ginger cat near the goat shed.

^
And here's a latest photo of baby Maya Afiqah.

Nightmares

My mum and sis had been having nightmares involving baby Maya Afiqah. I think it will be much more interesting if I explain it in visual.

Nightmare #1 - drawn using stick figure
Nightmare #2 - drawn using vector graphic

NIGHTMARE # 1

Mum told us that she dreamt she was holding baby Maya when suddenly baby Maya grew longer and longer in my mum's arms. She knew then that she was holding something else. Erkkkk. She woke up to find.. baby Maya fast asleep on her lap.

Somehow mum's nightmare was quite similar to my real life experience with my soft toy Mogwai. Click here to read the story (its in Malay). Refer 3# Ghost Encounters.

NIGHTMARE # 2

My sis had a nightmare - baby Maya was being attacked by a swarm of mosquitoes. She did everything she could to save the baby from being bitten, but baby Maya ended up swollen with red mosquito marks all over her body.

Adieha's Leek Soup

My dad just bought a few stalks of leek and ask me to cook Leek Soup. I have never cooked Leek Soup before, so I looked up in the Internet for the recipe. Most of the recipes for Leek Soup includes potatoes. But I didn't want to add potatoes, coz it would somehow change the flavour of the soup. So I decided to make my own version of Leek Soup WITHOUT potatoes! If you remember, before I had already made a post about Asparagus Soup. Well, that was my dad's request as well. I predict the next soup he'll be asking me to make is Onion Soup, Clam Chowder, Rhubarb Soup or maybe even Broccoli Cheese Soup. Oh my! Slurpp.

Verdict: The soup was really good. Warms up your tummy. The leek has a distinct smell. I realized when I was chopping, it smells like onion, garlic and a slight smell of ginger - combined. It has a very mild, delicate onion taste. But most importantly it doesn't make you cry when you chop it. I'd look it up in Wikipedia and found out that leek is a vegetable that belongs to the onion and garlic family.

The Ingredients
4 stalks of leek } chopped
1 onion } diced
3-4 cloves of garlic } finely chopped
1" ginger } finely chopped
3-5 pieces of chicken
salt and pepper
corn starch slurry
4 tbsp of oil

The Stock
1 ½ litres of water
2 cubes of Maggi Chicken Stock
or
you can prepare your own chicken stock from scratch in advance. I use the easy way. Ehehe.

Steps
1. Sauté the onion, garlic and ginger in a pot with the oil. Sauté until the onions are translucent.
2. Add in the chicken stock, leeks and chicken pieces. Let it boil until chicken is cooked and the leeks has soften.
3. Scoop out the chicken pieces and put aside. Separate the meat from the bones.
4. Scoop out the leeks from the soup. Leave about ¼ of the leeks in the pot. Let the leek cool for awhile.
5. Blend the leek with 2 cups of soup to create a creamy paste. Add the paste back into the pot, together with the chicken meat. Stir well.
6. Add in seasoning. Wait until it boils, add in corn starch slurry. Mix well. Simmer for 5 minutes. Serve while its hot.

This recipe serves 5-6 people.

Note:
- You can add in potatoes or a tin of cream to make the soup thicker. Blend the potatoes with the leeks.
- You can also add in other veggies into the soup before blending such as carrots and broccoli. Just don't use too much, then it won't be leek soup anymore, it will be veggie soup. :P

^
This is Leek and Potato Soup. Mine looks greener coz I didn't use potatoes. :)
